Hungary to buy 800 million cubic metres of gas from Azerbaijan New deal
A two-year agreement has been signed for the supply of natural gas from Azerbaijan to Hungary, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó announced.
“Another natural gas purchase agreement: this time with Azerbaijan, for two years, 800 million cubic metres!, Szijjártó wrote on X, Caliber.Az reports.
Azerbaijan has been steadily expanding its natural gas exports to Europe through the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC), a strategic route that delivers Azerbaijani gas from the Shah Deniz field to EU markets via Georgia, Türkiye, Greece, Albania and Italy. The Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), the final leg of the SGC, became operational in 2020 and currently supplies around 10 bcm of gas to Europe annually.
In recent years, Brussels and several EU member states have sought to deepen energy cooperation with Baku with a diversification aim. In 2022, the EU and Azerbaijan signed a memorandum of understanding to double Azerbaijani gas deliveries to Europe to 20 bcm per year by 2027.
Hungary has been one of the most active EU countries pursuing long-term energy ties with Azerbaijan. Budapest began importing test volumes of Azerbaijani gas in 2023 via the TAP–Türkiye–Bulgaria–Romania route and has repeatedly stated its intention to secure larger and more stable supplies from Baku to strengthen its energy security.
