Iğdır–Nakhchivan pipeline opens door for reverse gas flow, deputy minister says

16 January 2026 18:29

The Iğdır-Nakhchivan gas pipeline, which ensures direct natural gas supplies via a land route between Nakhchivan and Türkiye, also offers potential for reverse gas flow thanks to increased transmission capacity, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Energy Orkhan Zeynalov said at the International Ayder Energy Forum in Rize, Türkiye.

Zeynalov emphasized that the project not only strengthens Nakhchivan’s energy supply but also lays the foundation for future infrastructure synchronization within the framework of the Zangazur Corridor, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

The deputy minister highlighted the role of the Azerbaijani–Turkish strategic alliance in promoting regional security, sustainable development, and multilateral cooperation in the energy sector. “Cooperation between the two countries in this field will continue to develop through the Azerbaijan–Türkiye Energy Forum, specialized working groups, and joint projects aimed at creating green energy corridors,” he said.

Zeynalov also outlined plans to transmit green energy from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan to Nakhchivan, and subsequently onward to Türkiye and Europe. He spoke about opportunities to develop infrastructure for electricity exports via Georgia to Türkiye and beyond, as well as the Green Energy Corridor project connecting Azerbaijan, Georgia, Türkiye, and Bulgaria.

The deputy minister further stressed the importance of Turkish companies’ involvement in the development of Karabakh and East Zangazur as green energy zones, noting the value of Türkiye’s experience in renewable energy, electricity storage, green hydrogen, energy efficiency, and modern energy technologies.

He underscored that ongoing and planned energy projects are mutually beneficial, contributing to regional stability, enhancing energy security, and fostering broader international cooperation.

The Iğdır-Nakhchivan gas pipeline was commissioned on March 5, 2025, with a transmission capacity of 2 million cubic metres per day.
