Iran announces new strikes on Kuwait following expanded US attacks
Iran's military has announced a new wave of retaliatory strikes targeting Kuwait, saying the attacks were aimed at US military infrastructure in the country.
The strikes targeted US military bases, air defence and missile defence systems, as well as bunkers and storage facilities, Iranian media reports.
The announcement came after the US military said it had carried out strikes on around 140 targets early on July 12, marking a significantly larger operation than its previous two rounds of attacks over the past week. According to the US, the targets included missile and drone launch sites, ammunition depots, communications equipment and other military facilities.
Iran has responded by launching attacks against countries in the region that host US military forces, while reiterating its position that it alone should control the Strait of Hormuz and could potentially impose transit charges on vessels passing through the strategic waterway.
Iranian strikes on July 12 targeted Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan and Oman. The attack on Oman drew a diplomatic response, with Muscat summoning an Iranian diplomat to protest the strike. Oman, which shares the waters of the Strait of Hormuz with Iran, has long served as an intermediary between Tehran and Western countries.
