Iran announces plan to construct research nuclear reactor in Isfahan

Head of the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran (AEOI) Mohammad Eslami has said that work would soon begin in the coming weeks to construct a research reactor at Isfahan's Uranium Conversion Facility.

Eslami pointed out that with the launch of a research reactor, fuel testing operations in different parts of the plant would be made possible, Iran's Mehr news agency reported on July 27. 

"All the details of this plan are based on indigenised and Iranian knowledge, and it will complete the research, evaluation, testing and assurance chain of nuclear production," added the nuclear chief.

Eslami added that the production of nuclear fuel at Isfahan was only one of the AEOI's programmes that would enable Iran to join the ranks of clean fuel manufacturers in the world.

Referring to power plants, the nuclear official remarked that one power plant had already been built to produce 1,000 MW and another was under construction that would produce 2,000 MW, with the organisation's goal to produce 10,000 MW of nuclear energy.
