Iran envoy: Russia and China could help guarantee deal with US
Iran’s ambassador to Tunisia, Mir Massoud Hosseinian, has stated that Russia and China could serve as guarantors of a possible agreement between Tehran and Washington.
He said the United Nations Security Council could provide the legal and political framework for registering and ratifying an agreement and, if necessary, establish monitoring mechanisms or collective response tools, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
Commenting on potential mechanisms for implementing any deal, he said these major powers and permanent members of the UN Security Council could play a political role and help ensure the agreement’s implementation through diplomatic support, participation in monitoring mechanisms, and efforts to prevent violations or attempts to undermine it at the international level.
The diplomat also expressed gratitude to Russia for using its veto power on a draft UN Security Council resolution concerning maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, and highlighted close bilateral contacts, including regular telephone consultations between heads of state and foreign ministers.
“Our relations with Russia are friendly in nature and based on mutual trust. During this war, the heads of state of both countries have held three telephone consultations, and the foreign ministers ten,” he mentioned.
Hosseinian emphasised that this demonstrates a high degree of coordination and confirms the existence of close ties between the two countries.
“We welcome new ideas from our friends, including Russia and China. We thank the Russian Federation and China for using their veto power regarding the recent resolution, and Russia, without a doubt, plays an important role in mediation and reducing tensions,” the ambassador added.
