Iran: Memorandum with US rested on "commitment for commitment" principle
On July 9, a spokesperson for the Iranian Embassy in Moscow said the memorandum of understanding between Iran and the United States was based from the outset on a clear "commitment for commitment" mechanism rather than trust, arguing that there had been no signs of goodwill from Washington.
Speaking to Russian media, the spokesperson said the United States had "effectively undermined" the framework of the agreement through its unilateral actions and attacks against Iran.
The spokesperson also said Washington was "effectively repudiating" the fifth clause of the memorandum, which recognises Iran's role in determining the safe passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran will continue to firmly defend its national interests and resolutely exercise its sovereign rights," the spokesperson said.
