Iran's first "defensive tunnel" under construction in Tehran following Israeli attacks
Iran is constructing a "defensive tunnel" near Tehran's city centre in response to Israeli strikes on Iranian targets.
The tunnel will connect a station on the Tehran metro to the Imam Khomeini hospital, providing direct underground access to the medical facility, Caliber.Az reports per Iranian media.
This marks the first time such a tunnel with defensive purposes is being developed in the country.
The head of transport for Tehran City Council explained, "For the first time in the country, a tunnel with defensive purposes is being constructed in Tehran."
The tunnel construction follows a series of Israeli airstrikes last month, which targeted missile factories and other military sites in and around Tehran, as well as in western Iran.
Thus, Israel conducted what it described as "precise and targeted" airstrikes on Iran on October 25 retaliating for the missile attacks launched by Tehran against Israel on October 1. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) targeted military sites across multiple regions, with reports indicating that a missile production facility was hit. According to the Iranian military, one civilian and four soldiers were killed in the strikes.
This escalation marks the latest in a series of attacks between the two regional adversaries, heightening concerns of an all-out war. Iranian media reported explosions in Tehran with video footage.
The IDF's strikes, which lasted for about three hours, involved numerous aircraft, including jets and drones. Targets included Iran's air defences, missile production, and launch facilities. Satellite images analysed by researchers suggested that buildings in Parchin, a military complex near Tehran, were struck, potentially crippling Iran's missile production capabilitie.
