Iran vows swift retaliation following assassination of Hamas leader

20 September 2024 21:26

Iran has vowed to deliver a prompt response to Israel following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the political bureau of the Palestinian Hamas movement, which occurred in Tehran on July 31.

Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's chief of staff Mohammad Mohammadi Golpayegani, stated that a response from Iran is imminent, Caliber.Az reports via Iranian media.

Golpayegani emphasized that “Israel's actions will not go unanswered,” indicating the seriousness of the situation.

The statement reflects the heightened tensions between Iran and Israel, with Iran positioning itself as a key supporter of Palestinian groups in the region. The international community is closely monitoring the developments, as the potential for escalation remains significant.

Hamas’ top political leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed by a predawn airstrike in the Iranian capital.

Iran’s supreme leader vowed revenge against Israel.

Israel had pledged to kill Ismail Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders over the group’s October 7 attack on southern Israel that sparked the war in Gaza. The strike came just after Haniyeh had attended the inauguration of Iran’s new president in Tehran — and hours after Israel targeted a top commander in Iran’s ally Hezbollah in the Lebanese capital, Beirut.
