Iraq to hold presidential election in days to come
Iraq’s presidential election will be held in the country’s Council of Representatives (parliament) on January 27, 2026, as announced by Speaker of the Iraqi parliament Haibat al-Halbousi, according to the INA news agency.
“The parliamentary session to elect the president of the republic has been scheduled for next Tuesday, January 27,” the outlet quoted the speaker as saying.
The final list of candidates for the post of head of the Iraqi state includes 19 people. Among them are Iraq’s incumbent President Abdul Latif Rashid, who submitted his application independently, as well as the current Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein.
At the end of 2025, the Iraqi parliament elected al-Halbusi as chairman of the Council of Representatives. Under the country’s constitution, within the following 30 days lawmakers must choose the president of the republic, who in turn must task the largest parliamentary coalition with nominating a candidate for the post of Iraq’s prime minister.
