Israeli ambassador thanks Azerbaijan for counterterrorism partnership after Washington attack
Israel's ambassador to Azerbaijan, George Deek, expressed gratitude to Baku for its cooperation in the fight against terrorism, following the fatal shooting of two Israeli diplomats in Washington on May 21.
Speaking at an international conference titled “Role, Duties and Responsibilities of Supervisory Authorities in Combating Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing” — part of Azerbaijan's Year of the Constitution and Sovereignty — Deek said the threat of terrorism was re-emerging, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
“Sadly, terrorism has resurfaced. Yesterday, two Israeli diplomats were murdered in the streets of Washington,” the ambassador said.
“I once again extend my condolences to their families, our embassy in Washington and our diplomatic service. I also thank Azerbaijan for its partnership in counterterrorism efforts both here and elsewhere, as well as for its condolences following the attack.”
Deek warned that terrorism was becoming increasingly sophisticated, particularly with the use of emerging technologies. “Artificial intelligence and modern technologies, while full of potential, pose a serious threat when in the hands of terrorists,” he said.
Highlighting growing ties between the two countries, Deek noted that bilateral relations — especially in the fields of security and counterterrorism — had deepened and expanded in recent years.
To recall, two Israeli Embassy staff members were shot dead outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC, on May 21 night in what appears to be a politically charged attack. The victims, identified by Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, were a couple reportedly planning to become engaged.
The shooting occurred during a young professionals event hosted by the American Jewish Committee. The suspect, 31-year-old Elias Rodriguez from Chicago, allegedly posed as a bystander before surrendering to police, shouting “Free, Free Palestine” as he was arrested.
Authorities say the suspect is in custody and has taken responsibility for the attack.
