Istanbul bans access to forests, fireworks amid surge in wildfires
Authorities in Istanbul have announced new preventive measures to combat a rise in forest fires as hot and dry conditions grip large parts of Türkiye this summer.
In a written statement, the Istanbul Governor’s Office said that access to all forested areas in the province will be strictly prohibited from June 23 to October 15. Additionally, the sale and use of flammable or explosive materials—including fireworks, signal flares, and torches—will be banned across Istanbul from July 29 to October 28, Caliber.Az reports via Turkish media.
The measures come in response to an uptick in wildfires across the country, which officials attribute to the extreme heat.
“Our forests are under serious threat due to soaring temperatures. To protect these vital natural areas and ensure public safety, we have introduced stricter regulations,” the Governor’s Office said.
Law enforcement agencies, including the police and gendarmerie, will carry out regular inspections to enforce the bans. Authorities warned that both individuals and businesses found violating the restrictions will face legal penalties.
