Italy hails Southern Gas Corridor's key role in securing energy transition at Baku summit
Italy is appreciative of the key role that the Southern Gas Corridor plays in the execution of the energy transition, which aims to ensure the secure supply of energy that aligns with the decisions agreed upon within COP29.
This was stated by Italy's Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Vannia Gava, during her speech at the 11th Southern Gas Corridor Advisory Council Ministerial Meeting and the 3rd Green Energy Advisory Council Ministerial Meeting. The event is currently taking place at the Gulustan Palace in Baku, Caliber.Az reports citing local media.
The deputy minister informed the audience noted that Italy was able to import over 36 billion cubic meters of gas through this corridor ever since it became operational at the end of 2020.
"This was also achieved through the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP). In 2024, TAP became Italy’s second-largest supply route. TAP will help strengthen Italy’s role as a strategic energy hub, connecting Europe with the Caspian region and North Africa, and we have already begun the process of increasing the pipeline’s capacity," Gava stated.
The Southern Gas Corridor energy projects aims to increase and diversify the European energy supply by delivering gas resources from the Caspian Sea to markets in Europe. The Southern Gas Corridor originates in the Azerbaijani offshore Shah Deniz natural gas-condensate field and is transporting the natural resource through multiple pipelines to it's final destination, Italy: the South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP; through Azerbaijan and Georgia), the Trans-Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP; through Türkiye) with the final stretch being transported through the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline (TAP; through Greece, Albania and Italy.)
