Kazakh president to visit Azerbaijan this year, ambassador says

04 June 2026 20:31

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev is expected to visit Azerbaijan this year, Agalar Atamoglanov, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Kazakhstan, has stated at an event in Astana dedicated to Azerbaijan’s Independence Day and Armed Forces Day.

The diplomat stressed that bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have developed actively and consistently over the past five years, noting a high level of mutual understanding, trust, and support on nearly all issues, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

Atamoglanov said the strategic partnership and allied relations between the two countries have reached a new level, recalling the 2022 Declaration on deepening strategic partnership and alliance relations, as well as the establishment of the Supreme Interstate Council in 2023 and the holding of two of its meetings.

He highlighted intensive political dialogue between the heads of state, noting that in the past five years, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev visited Kazakhstan eight times, while President Tokayev visited Azerbaijan six times.

The ambassador also said that high-level contacts have continued across other levels, including mutual visits by prime ministers and foreign ministers between 2022 and 2025.

According to him, the legal framework between the two countries has continued to expand, with 64 documents signed over the past four years and a total of 190 bilateral agreements now in place.

Atamoglanov noted growing cooperation in transport, logistics, investment, energy, green energy, and trade, adding that bilateral trade has increased fivefold. He also said the Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan joint investment fund is currently reviewing several projects.

He underlined the importance of the Middle Corridor, saying Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan are working jointly to increase its attractiveness, speed, competitiveness, and security, with transit currently taking 15–18 days.

The ambassador also said the launch of the Zangezur Corridor—internationally referred to as the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity”—would significantly expand the Middle Corridor’s capacity, noting that 90% of the road and about 70% of railway infrastructure on the Azerbaijani side is already complete.

He added that the Trans-Caspian fibre-optic communication line between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan, part of the “Digital Silk Road” project, is expected to be launched in the coming months.

Atamoglanov also highlighted the implementation of a green energy export project to European markets across the Caspian Sea, carried out by Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan through a joint venture.

He further emphasised expanding humanitarian cooperation in culture, education, and tourism, noting that 104,000 Kazakh visitors travelled to Azerbaijan in 2025, a 1.5-fold increase compared to 2021.

He added that 346 Azerbaijani students are currently studying in Kazakhstan, while 180 Kazakh students are studying in Azerbaijan.

The ambassador concluded by saying Kazakhstan has become a second homeland for his family and expressed confidence in further strengthening friendship between the two countries.
