Kazakhstan in talks to resume oil shipments via Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan pipeline Video
Kazakhstan is in discussions to resume oil deliveries through the Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, which were previously suspended.
Kazakhstan’s Energy Minister, Yerlan Akkenzhenov, said that while he had not seen any official statements from the pipeline operator regarding the presence of chlorinated organic compounds, he was aware of reports suggesting a temporary halt in shipments, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
“KazMunayGas is currently negotiating to restart deliveries along this route as soon as possible,” he added.
The minister noted that the BTC pipeline has significant capacity, meaning that if shippers see economic incentives, there is potential to increase exports.
Earlier reports indicated that Kazakhstan had temporarily rerouted oil shipments from the BTC pipeline to the Caspian Pipeline Consortium route.
This followed a statement from British Petroleum on July 23, citing potential contamination of Azerbaijani crude with organic chlorides.
The BTC pipeline company issued a force majeure notice on July 29, 2025, to Azertrans, the operator of an oil terminal in Azerbaijan, after detecting chloride contamination in the crude oil.
Kazakhstan's oil from the Tengiz and Kashagan fields was found to be free from organic chlorine compounds, ruling out Kazakhstan as the source of the contamination.
During the suspension, Kazakhstan redirected its shipments through the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) pipeline.
The suspension affected oil deliveries to European refineries, including those in Romania, Austria, and Italy.
