Kremlin says it lacks data on Russian troop numbers in Syria
The Kremlin does not have specific information on the number of Russian military personnel currently stationed in Syria, a matter under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Defense, according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.
“This can only be clarified by our military; I cannot provide an exact figure,” Peskov told reporters during a press briefing, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Commenting on Russia's interactions with Syria’s new authorities, Peskov stated, “It’s still too early to provide detailed results from our contacts.” However, he emphasized the necessity of maintaining dialogue with those currently in control of the ground situation in Syria.
“We have to communicate with those who are now in control because we have our facilities and, most importantly, our people there,” Peskov noted, reaffirming that the Kremlin is closely monitoring developments in Syria.
The Kremlin representative further highlighted the significance of safeguarding Russian interests in the region, including military bases and diplomatic missions, following the departure of Bashar al-Assad from the presidency.
“We are, of course, paying close attention to everything happening in Syria and maintaining contacts with those in control of the situation,” Peskov said.
