Kyrgyz president urges developed nations to boost climate finance to $2 trillion
President Sadyr Japarov of Kyrgyzstan has called for coordinated and well-funded climate actions in response to the intensifying global climate crisis.
Speaking at the COP29 leaders’ summit in Baku, the Kyrgyz leader emphasised that only collaborative efforts could ensure the successful achievement of the goals set by the Paris Agreement, Caliber.Az reports.
Japarov stated, "When it comes to climate issues, we must unite our efforts, regardless of the bilateral relations between nations. We support the early adoption of a new collective climate finance target and urge developed countries to increase their financial aid to developing nations to $2 trillion, while ensuring easy access to this funding."
He also highlighted Kyrgyzstan's initiative in debt-for-development swaps, aimed at funding sustainable and green projects.
"Kyrgyzstan is implementing a number of renewable energy projects. Together with neighbouring countries, we have launched the construction of the region's largest hydropower station, the Kambaratinskaya HPP," he said.
The president further stressed the need for rational water resource management in light of the accelerated melting of glaciers, desertification, and the overall reduction of water supplies.
"The annual reduction of water resources negatively impacts several sectors, including energy, security, and the economy," Japarov concluded.
As the climate crisis worsens, Japarov's statements highlight the urgent need for a unified global response to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
