Lawyer says no grounds for arrest of Azerbaijani student in Iran

10 August 2023 19:25

A lawyer has been hired for Azerbaijani citizen Farid Safarli arrested in Iran.

Farid Safarli's mother Dilara Asgarova told Trend that this is an Azerbaijani lawyer living in Iran.

"The lawyer has already familiarised himself with the case, met with Farid and the judge. The lawyer noted that there are no grounds for Farid's arrest," she said.

Asgarova added that she spoke to her son on the phone on August 9.

"Farid said that he had health problems and underwent intestinal surgery. At present his condition is good, but he is very concerned about what is happening. A ruling on Farid's case is due in the coming days. According to the lawyer, according to Iran's laws, the judge can pass a sentence on Farid without his presence at the last court session and without giving him the last word. In the judge's opinion, Farid travelled to Iran for the purpose of espionage but failed to do so. However, there is no evidence of this," she said.

Farid Safarli (born in 1997), a student of Jena University in Germany, visited Iran on February 20, 2023, and since March 4 there has been no news from him. Later it turned out that he was arrested in Iran.

The charge of "espionage" brought against Farid Safarli during a court hearing on July 19 was replaced by a charge of "intent to commit espionage".
