Marta Kos: Georgia reforms threaten its EU membership path
Recent legislative changes in Georgia are raising serious concerns and are pushing the country further away from its European future, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said on April 20.
Speaking during a meeting of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, Kos said progress among EU candidate countries was uneven and singled out developments in Tbilisi, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media.
“The recent legislative changes adopted in Georgia are causing serious concern, said EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos during the ongoing meeting of the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs.
According to Marta Kos's assessment, the "progress of candidate countries on the path to EU membership is not uniform."
"The autocratic system of state control over political expression is pushing Georgia even further away from its European future, which is desired by the vast majority of its population. Our goal is for Georgia to remain connected to the European Union, and for us to maintain the ability to protect the interests of the European Union," Kos stated.
Responding to a question about the importance of the Middle Corridor, Kos said “it is impossible to discuss a real connectivity agenda without Georgia.”
