Media: Azerbaijan uncovers mass graves in Karabakh, accuses Armenia of war crimes Photo

01 May 2025 22:28

One of Türkiye’s leading print newspapers, Türkiye Gazetesi, has informed its millions-strong readership about Armenian atrocities in Azerbaijan, where mass graves continue to be discovered in territories liberated from occupation.

The disturbing discoveries were reported near Shusha and along the Askeran-Khojaly road, where the remains of at least a dozen individuals were found, Caliber.Az reports.

According to the Azerbaijani State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing Persons, forensic investigations have revealed that the victims, believed to be Azerbaijani civilians, were subjected to brutal torture before being killed. Several bodies displayed signs of blunt force trauma, including fractured skulls and broken limbs.

“One of the mass graves near Shusha contained five individuals, while another site yielded the remains of at least seven people,” said Eldar Samadov, Deputy Head of the Commission’s Working Group. “Initial examinations show that many were women. Their clothing and the nature of the injuries confirm that they were unarmed civilians.”

The findings were made during ongoing infrastructure and road construction work in the Karabakh region. Authorities say many of the bodies had been hastily buried and showed evidence of violent death, pointing to systematic abuse by Armenian forces during the 1990s conflict.

“These are clear signs of war crimes committed by Armenia,” Samadov told reporters. “Despite years of appeals via international organisations, Armenia continues to withhold information on the fate of missing persons, violating its obligations under the Geneva Conventions.”

The grim discovery adds to the growing list of burial sites unearthed since the end of the Second Karabakh War in 2020. Azerbaijan has so far recovered 187 sets of human remains from identified mass graves, while an additional 309 remains have been found incidentally during reconstruction efforts across Karabakh. Of these, 170 individuals have been identified to date.

The Azerbaijani government says 3,983 of its citizens — including 774 civilians — have remained missing since the first war. Officials continue to demand answers from Yerevan, accusing Armenian authorities of concealing the whereabouts of grave sites and those still unaccounted for.
