Media: Russia’s disinformation campaign targets US support for Ukraine ahead of Trump’s return

07 December 2024 15:40

As President Joe Biden uses his final days in office to bolster Ukraine’s defence, Russia is intensifying its disinformation efforts, aiming to weaken U.S. support for Ukraine before Donald Trump’s anticipated return to the White House.

Since the U.S. election on November 5, the Kremlin has leveraged state-run media, fake news sites, and social media to promote divisive narratives about the war and the Republican president-elect, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Fake videos, including one showing Ukrainian soldiers burning effigies of Trump or firing at a mannequin dressed in Trump gear, have circulated widely, especially on platforms like X, Telegram, and YouTube. Analysts have debunked these videos, noting signs of digital manipulation.

“It’s planted by the Russians, this idea that ‘Ukraine is so corrupt it shouldn’t even be a state, and we are the right people to be running this place,’” said Rupert Smith, a retired British general. He added, “Now this is being used as an excuse for not supporting Ukraine.”

Russia’s continued push to undermine American unity on Ukraine aims to reduce vital military aid, which has been crucial for Ukraine’s defence since Russia's invasion in February 2022. The Kremlin’s strategy has evolved from portraying Ukraine’s leadership as corrupt to pushing the narrative that Ukraine cannot be trusted as an ally.

U.S. intelligence suggests Russia’s disinformation efforts align with its broader goal to support Trump, believing his presidency would reduce U.S. backing for Ukraine. Trump has criticized U.S. military aid to Ukraine and NATO, and vowed to end the war in 24 hours, a stance that has raised questions about his approach to the conflict.

Joshua Tucker, a New York University professor, explained that Russia's disinformation tactics are a long-term effort to undermine U.S. global leadership, saying, "The goal remains the same and goes beyond one election cycle or one candidate."

Meanwhile, the Biden administration has continued its support for Ukraine, with more than $56 billion in security assistance already sent, and more expected before Biden leaves office in January 2025.
