Memorial director: Bergen-Belsen plaque honours Azerbaijani POWs
The unveiling of a memorial plaque dedicated to Azerbaijani prisoners of war who perished at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp serves as a crucial reminder that the site was not only a Nazi concentration camp but also a prisoner-of-war camp where countless individuals endured horrific conditions, according to the director of the memorial.
Elke Gryglewski, Executive Director of the Lower Saxony Memorial Foundation and Director of the Bergen-Belsen Memorial, emphasised the importance of recognising the dual nature of the camp. Speaking to AZERTAC, she noted that Bergen-Belsen held a vast number of people under extremely harsh conditions as both concentration camp inmates and prisoners of war.
Gryglewski further highlighted the significance of demonstrating that the Soviet Army was composed of people from various nationalities.
She expressed deep satisfaction that the plaque was unveiled jointly with the Embassy of Azerbaijan, stating that the memorial foundation was very pleased to carry out the ceremony in partnership with Azerbaijan's diplomatic mission.
