Minister: COP29 discussions to boost agricultural support
Discussions at the global COP29 conference related to climate change will provide support to the agricultural sector, according to Azerbaijani Minister of Agriculture, Majnun Mammadov.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of COP29 in Baku, Mammadov emphasised the significance of the conference for Azerbaijan, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
"COP29 is one of the most important events for us. We hope that discussions on climate change will have a positive impact on the agricultural sector. The negative effects of climate change on agriculture are significant," the minister stated.
Mammadov added that Agriculture, Food, and Water Day will be observed on November 19 as part of COP29, during which the impact of climate change on the agricultural sector will be discussed.
According to him, one of Azerbaijan's 14 initiatives presented at COP29 focuses on the agricultural sector.
"The Baku Harmony climate initiative is aimed at supporting farmers. We hope that this initiative will act as an aggregator for all existing projects in the agricultural sector and lay the groundwork for critical decisions benefiting farmers," he added.
Notably, Azerbaijan, as the upcoming host of the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29), has outlined 14 key initiatives aimed at integrating climate action with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These initiatives cover a range of strategic areas, including the development of green energy corridors, enhancements in green energy storage, fostering climate resilience, advancing clean hydrogen technology, and reducing methane emissions from organic waste. Additionally, the proposals extend to innovations in green digital technologies, among other critical fields.
A significant component of the agenda is the proposal to establish a Climate Finance Action Fund. This fund is designed not only to prioritise climate finance but also to support the global aim of limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C, fostering unity among stakeholders.
Azerbaijan has demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental conservation and tackling climate change, with ongoing efforts on multiple fronts. The nation’s unanimous selection as the host for COP29 reflects the international community's deep respect and confidence in Azerbaijan's leadership in this area. President Ilham Aliyev noted that the decision symbolises significant recognition and trust from global partners.
