02 May 2025 12:42

Azerbaijan and Nepal are set to sign their first-ever Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking a significant milestone in their diplomatic relations.

The announcement came from Azerbaijan’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Elnur Mammadov, during a meeting with Nepalese President Ram Chandra Paudel, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

The meeting took place as part of an official visit by an Azerbaijani government delegation, led by Mammadov, to Nepal. This visit underscores the growing momentum in bilateral relations between the two countries.

Mammadov stated, “In the 30 years of diplomatic relations between Azerbaijan and Nepal, no Memorandum of Understanding has been signed. Currently, we are in the process of preparing such an agreement to strengthen our cooperation.”

President Paudel expressed satisfaction with the dynamic progress in relations between Kathmandu and Baku. He expressed optimism about the future of the bilateral ties, emphasising the potential for continued growth and collaboration.

The Nepalese president also recalled Nepal’s participation in the COP29 global climate conference in Baku last November, which further strengthened the cooperation between the two nations.

Before this breakthrough, Nepal and Azerbaijan conducted their first-ever political consultations at the foreign ministry level, with a special focus on expanding investment cooperation. The upcoming MoU is expected to pave the way for deeper engagement in various sectors.

President Ram Chandra Paudel expressed satisfaction with the growing momentum in bilateral relations and underscored the importance of deepening political and diplomatic ties.

The meeting was held at the Presidential Palace in Kathmandu.

The visit follows the first round of political consultations between the two countries, which took place in Kathmandu on April 30. The consultations marked a significant step forward in formalising and expanding cooperation across various sectors.

The official visit of the Azerbaijani delegation to Nepal is set to conclude on May 3.
