Minister: Azerbaijan aims to boost North-South transit cargo to 15 million tonnes
Azerbaijan plans to increase cargo throughput along the North-South transport corridor to 5 million tonnes per year by January 1, 2028, with long-term ambitions to reach 15 million tonnes annually.
The announcement was made by Rashad Nabiyev, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Digital Development and Transport, during the 83rd meeting of the CIS Council on Railway Transport, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Nabiyev highlighted that last year, Azerbaijan and Russia signed an agreement to develop transit shipments along the international corridor, which includes modernising rail infrastructure and gradually increasing cargo volumes.
“From January 1, 2028, we plan to raise throughput along this route to 5 million tonnes, and in the longer term, aim to reach 15 million tonnes annually,” he said.
The minister also confirmed that infrastructure upgrades on Azerbaijan’s section of the corridor are progressing, with the reconstruction of the Sumgayit–Yalama railway line expected to be completed by the end of the year.
