Parliamentary diplomacy in focus at Azerbaijan-Serbia talks
Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova held talks in Belgrade with Speaker of Serbia’s National Assembly Ana Brnabic, focusing on the development of bilateral and inter-parliamentary cooperation.
Azerbaijan’s parliamentary press service told local media that Brnabic described Azerbaijan as a friendly and allied country, adding that relations between the two states continue to develop steadily.
She highlighted the importance of economic ties, particularly cooperation in the energy sector, and expressed appreciation for Azerbaijan’s role in supporting Serbia’s energy security. Brnabic also outlined her views on the future development of parliamentary relations between the two countries.
Gafarova, for her part, praised the organisation of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s Global Conference of Women Parliamentarians held in Belgrade, noting that such platforms are important for addressing current global challenges.
Both sides underlined the significance of expanding cooperation not only in political and economic fields but also in the humanitarian sphere.
Gafarova emphasised the constructive role of parliaments in strengthening bilateral relations and highlighted the contribution of inter-parliamentary friendship groups. She also expressed satisfaction with cooperation within international parliamentary organisations, particularly the mutual support demonstrated by Azerbaijan and Serbia on issues related to territorial integrity and sovereignty.
She further pointed to the potential for deeper engagement between parliamentary committees as part of broader efforts to enhance institutional cooperation.
The meeting also included an exchange of views on other matters of mutual interest.
