PM: Yerevan hopes for opening of Armenian-Turkish border
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said that Yerevan hopes for the opening of the Armenian-Turkish border for citizens of third countries and people with diplomatic passports soon.
He made the remarks at a press conference on January 10, Caliber.Az reports citing the Armenian media.
“I hope that the border for third-country nationals will open soon. We also expect the border to be opened for those who have diplomatic passports. These events are important not only for Armenia-Türkiye relations. International logistics ties are being greatly changed. I think that this region is becoming much more interesting in terms of international cargo transportation than in the past, and is acquiring important international importance,” he noted.
Pashinyan welcomed Türkiye's decision to lift the ban on air cargo transportation for Armenia.
He noted that it is important not only to conduct negotiations between Armenia and Türkiye but also to take actions that will ensure the dynamics of these negotiations.
The Armenian prime minister emphasised that the opening of the border between Armenia and Türkiye and the Armenian-Turkish railway is gaining much more global significance.
He expressed hope that it would be possible to move along this route and expressed readiness to restore the Yeraskh (Arazdayan)-Sadarak-Ordubad-Meghri-Horadiz railway.
“We are ready for this process and are interested in it. We are also interested in the opening of roads in Armenia and road cargo transportation in the direction of West-East, as well as the construction of new roads,” he said.
“We are ready to realise our vision of the “Armenian Crossroads”. There are global changes in international logistics ties, cargo transportation and directions, and they can be used for the benefit of stability and peace in the region,” Pashinyan said.
The Armenian prime minister added that road and rail cargo transportation in the direction of North-South will be more intensive, as in this case, the matter rests in the restoration of the Iran-Armenia, Iran-Azerbaijan, and Iran-Russia railway transportation through Nakhchivan.
