Presidential aide deems German FM's accusations against Azerbaijan unacceptable
Azerbaijani presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev has called unacceptable the accusations by German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock against COP29 chair country Azerbaijan and other COP29 participants.
“COP29 concluded successfully, leaving its mark on the history of global climate action as the “BakuBreakthrough” with the establishment of a new financial target among other critical achievements. However, during the most critical and challenging moments of the negotiations, when the developing world and Global South were expecting concrete financial commitments from the European Union and at large from the West, it was unacceptable for Germany’s Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock to level accusations against Azerbaijan as COP Presidency and other parties to the convention,” Caliber.Az quotes Hajiyev as saying on X.
He said it is regrettable that Baerbock appears to have conflated Germany’s upcoming elections as such domestic politics with the extremely difficult multilateral diplomacy, likely attempting to use COP29 as a platform for her electoral campaign.
“She should have also considered that these difficult negotiations occurred in the absence of the German Chancellor and the European Commission, at a time when Europe failed to demonstrate leadership, and the world was deeply polarized geopolitically. But we acknowledge professional contributions and cooperation of climate negotiation teams of Germany and European Union,” Hajiyev noted.
He further added, “As the world witnessed Azerbaijan, as a host and chair of COP29 acted as an honest facilitator to deliver results.”
