Russia: Flooded homes in Dagestan, Chechnya nearly double after rains
Authorities in Russia’s North Caucasus are struggling to manage the aftermath of heavy rainfall that has caused significant flooding in Dagestan and Chechnya.
According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the number of flooded residential homes in the two republics has nearly doubled in the past 24 hours. As of April 2, 1,518 homes were affected, up from 872 on the morning of April 1, Interfax reports.
Chechnya’s Gudermes district has been particularly hard hit, with 24 homes flooded and 19 bridges damaged. However, Dagestan bears the brunt of the disaster, with 1,494 homes, 1,106 private plots, and 47 road sections submerged. Flooding has disrupted transport to eight settlements.
Emergency services have set up 11 temporary shelters, currently housing 415 residents.
