Russia slams French colonial policy for racial, cultural superiority

29 June 2024 15:16

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has sharply criticized France's colonial history, highlighting its foundations in racial and cultural superiority.

In a post on her Telegram channel, Zakharova condemned France's colonial legacy as deeply exploitative and damaging, Caliber.Az reports.

"Africa. At the time of colonial conquests, the French did not just actively engage in the slave trade, they turned the whole continent into their resource base," Zakharova posted.

She asserted that French colonial policies were driven by notions of racial and cultural superiority, with the French viewing themselves as bearers of higher meanings. This mindset led to the establishment of dynasties of French slave traders who amassed wealth, bought titles, and integrated into the highest echelons of nobility, often becoming advocates for liberalism and democracy while ignoring the suffering of the exploited populations.

Zakharova also pointed to the impact of French colonialism in Latin America and the Caribbean, citing Haiti as a notable example. She described similar colonial practices in Eurasia and North Africa, where France employed the same methods to dominate Southeast Asian, Middle Eastern, and North African countries such as Algeria, Syria, and Lebanon.

"The sad result of French colonial policy is millions of ruined lives, political instability, backward economy, and damage to the environment," Zakharova noted.
