Russian security service foils alleged assassination attempts linked to Ukraine VIDEO
The Federal Security Service (FSB) has announced the prevention of multiple assassination attempts on senior Ministry of Defence (MoD) officials involved in military operations in Ukraine, as well as their family members.
The thwarted attacks were allegedly orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence services, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
The FSB disclosed that four Russian nationals have been detained in connection with the plot. One of the suspects, a Russian citizen who had been living in Ukraine since 2020, reportedly entered Moscow in November, posing as a deportee after travelling through Moldova and Georgia.
“He retrieved a homemade explosive device, disguised as a power bank, from a hidden cache in the capital,” the spokesperson added. “This device was intended to be placed under the official vehicle of a senior MoD figure, whose driver happened to be a close relative of the suspect.”
The explosive was to be detonated remotely, with coordination allegedly carried out by the suspect's wife, who resides in Myrhorod, Ukraine. She is said to have been recruited by Ukrainian intelligence to assist in the operation.
Another detainee confessed to travelling to Ukraine, where he was reportedly recruited by Ukrainian intelligence before being sent back to Russia. “His mission was to monitor senior MoD personnel and their families, providing detailed information to his handlers for planning further attacks,” the FSB representative explained.
The agency also uncovered a separate assassination plot involving two other suspects. These individuals allegedly planned to deliver a folder containing explosives disguised as documents to another high-ranking military official.
“In total, we have confiscated several improvised explosive devices and communication tools from the suspects,” the FSB stated. “This underscores the level of sophistication and intent behind these plots.”
Criminal charges have been filed against the four individuals, including illegal possession of explosive materials, preparation of terrorist acts, and high treason. “The punishment for such crimes is severe, reflecting the gravity of their betrayal,” the FSB spokesperson concluded.
