Shootout occurs with trespassers on Iranian border Border guards thwart drug smuggling
In an effort to stop the drug smuggling attempt, border guards and drug traffickers engaged in gunfire on the state border with Iran.
The Goytapa border detachment of the Azerbaijani State Border Service prevented the smuggling of a big batch of drugs from Iran to Azerbaijan as a result of the measures taken on December 29 at 02:00 (GMT+4) in the territory of the border outpost located near Perimbel village of the Yardimli district and at 14:30 (GMT+4) in the territory of the border outpost, located near Dashkand village of the same district.
While ignoring the requirements of the border detachment, border violators in both cases fired at the border guards, the Azerbaijani State Border Service told Caliber.Az.
The border guards used weapons for preventive purposes in accordance with the requirements of the Law of the Republic of Azerbaijan “On the State Border”. The border violators managed to escape back to the Iranian territory, leaving drugs.
Some 170 kg 106 g of drugs were found and seized (20 kg 158 g of heroin, 142 kg 131 g of marijuana, four kg 792 g of methamphetamine, three kg 025 g of opium and 81,228 "Methadone M-40" pills) as a result of search operations carried out in both directions.
The meetings were held and information was exchanged with representatives of the Iranian border services in connection with these armed incidents.
Both incidents are under investigation.
