Speaker: European Parliament manipulated by anti-Azerbaijani forces
On October 24, yet another political action targeting Azerbaijan was orchestrated within the European Parliament, Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker Sahiba Gafarova highlighted during a session of the Milli Majlis.
Gafarova expressed her discontent with the recent resolution, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
“Unfortunately, the European Parliament has become a tool for forces engaged in a slanderous campaign against Azerbaijan. This resolution not only reveals a bias regarding the historical and contemporary realities of our region but also casts doubt on Azerbaijan's victory. For three decades, Armenia occupied our lands, yet the international community chose to remain silent,” she stated.
She also raised concerns about the European Parliament's stance regarding the upcoming COP29 event, scheduled to take place in Azerbaijan this November. “Azerbaijan is dedicated to fostering peace in the region and categorically rejects any form of bias. Our country maintains an independent domestic and foreign policy. No amount of pressure or threats will deter us from our course,” Gafarova asserted.
It is important to note that on October 24, the European Parliament adopted a resolution titled “On the Situation in Azerbaijan, Violations of Human Rights and International Law, and Relations with Armenia.”
In response, on October 25, the EU Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Peter Michalko, was summoned to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, where a formal note of protest was delivered.
The Ministry strongly condemned the European Parliament's resolution, as well as the unfounded and biased remarks made by the European Commissioner during the discussions.
The Ministry emphasized that the ongoing smear campaign against Azerbaijan through various EU institutions, along with statements and actions that threaten the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as interference in its internal affairs, foster revanchism in Armenia and undermine peace efforts in the region.
Furthermore, the Ministry highlighted that Azerbaijan aims to build its relationship with the EU based on the principles of international law, mutual respect, and equality, urging the EU to adhere to these principles as well.
