Swedish journal: Azerbaijan’s constitutional milestone shapes future stability

18 February 2025 09:48

The Swedish platform Diplomatic World Sweden, a publication aimed at politicians and foreign embassy staff, has published an article detailing Azerbaijan’s declaration of 2025 as the Year of Constitution and Sovereignty.

According to local media reports, the article describes this designation as “an important milestone in the country’s history” since it marks both the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution and the 5th anniversary of the restoration of Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity, per Caliber.Az.

The article explores Azerbaijan’s constitutional development following its independence from the Soviet Union, underscoring the significance of the 1995 Constitution, which was adopted under the leadership of then-President Heydar Aliyev. It states: “The 1995 Constitution played a decisive role in shaping Azerbaijan’s political and legal system.”

Additionally, it highlights President Ilham Aliyev’s recent decree establishing September 20 as the Day of State Sovereignty, further reinforcing the country’s commitment to national independence.

The publication also discusses Azerbaijan’s growing presence on the global stage, stating: “Azerbaijan has strengthened its position in international affairs through active participation in global initiatives.” It specifically mentions the country’s hosting of COP29 in 2024 in Baku, as well as previous international events such as the UN Alliance of Civilizations Global Forum, intercultural and interfaith dialogue platforms, and humanitarian forums. “These initiatives have positioned Azerbaijan as a bridge between East and West, reaffirming its significance in international cooperation,” the article notes.

The conclusion emphasizes that the Year of Constitution and Sovereignty is not merely symbolic but a reflection of Azerbaijan’s strategic goals. The article asserts: “This declaration is a demonstration of Azerbaijan’s commitment to strengthening state institutions, protecting territorial integrity, and ensuring stability in the region.”

It further suggests that the coming years could mark “a period of significant transformation” for Azerbaijan as it continues to grow as an economic, energy, and transport hub, bringing positive impacts to the broader region.
