Switzerland stresses need for continued Armenia–Azerbaijan peace efforts

09 January 2026 11:34

Switzerland has called on Azerbaijan and Armenia to continue working toward the establishment of a lasting peace in the South Caucasus.

The Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed this position in exclusive comments to Report news agency.

The ministry also highlighted the importance of the summit held on August 8, 2025, in Washington between the leaders of Azerbaijan, the United States and Armenia, noting its relevance for advancing the normalisation process between the two South Caucasus states.

“Switzerland welcomes the recent substantial and positive developments in relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, including the joint declaration adopted in Washington, D.C., on August 8, 2025. Switzerland urges both sides to fully implement the measures they have agreed upon and to sustain their efforts to achieve an enduring peace that will benefit their peoples and the wider region,” the ministry stated.

Discussing Switzerland’s priorities for its 2026 chairmanship of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the ministry indicated that Bern intends to promote inclusive security-related dialogue, work in close coordination with all participating States, and support consensus-based solutions acceptable to all 57 OSCE members.

“This work may take place at different levels and will be shaped by the priorities of the Swiss chairmanship. In addition, several international conferences will be organised, creating opportunities to discuss key tasks. Switzerland aims to ensure that OSCE tools can be made available to participating States upon request, regardless of their region,” the ministry added.

When asked about a potential visit to the South Caucasus by the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis, the ministry noted that he intends to visit a number of OSCE participating States, but specific dates have not yet been determined: “Travel plans have not been officially announced, and therefore no further information can be provided at this stage regarding particular visits or agendas.”
