Tashkent hosts founding event for Western Azerbaijanis' public association
A Public Association of Western Azerbaijanis has been established in Uzbekistan, with the event taking place at the Heydar Aliyev Azerbaijan Cultural Centre in Tashkent.
This initiative was supported by the Azerbaijani Embassy in Uzbekistan and the Azerbaijani community residing in the country, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
During the opening speech, Nadir Alimirzayev, the deputy director of the Cultural Centre, addressed the tragic history of ethnic cleansing and deportations of Azerbaijanis by Armenians in Western Azerbaijan over the centuries. He also discussed the socio-political and cultural life of Azerbaijanis from the Caucasus and Western Azerbaijan in the 19th and 20th centuries, stressing their significant role in the literary and cultural landscape.
Chairing the meeting, Vidadi Gurbanov called for nominations for the position of head and deputy chairman of the newly formed association.
At the suggestion of Ismail Mammadov, the participants supported Ilham Abdullayev, born in the Basarkechar district of Western Azerbaijan, as the head of the Public Association, and Adalat Gojamanov for the deputy chairman position.
Following the Constituent Assembly of the Public Association "Western Azerbaijanis Living in Uzbekistan," the conference attendees agreed to prepare the necessary documents for submission to relevant organizations for official registration.
