TASS: US–Iran deal could pave way for stronger EU sanctions on Russia
The signing of a memorandum between the United States and Iran could result in increased sanctions pressure from the European Union on Russia, as reduced risks to the global oil market would make it easier for EU member states to agree on new restrictive measures.
The assessment was provided to TASS by a source in Western diplomatic circles.
“Currently, some European countries are taking a cautious position due to risks to the oil market. If, as a result of the signing of the memorandum between the United States and Iran, the threat of supply disruptions decreases, this could open the way to stronger EU sanctions pressure on Russia and the adoption of additional measures to support Ukraine,” the source said.
According to the source, a key factor remains the situation around the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of global oil supplies passes. Any de-escalation in the region could reduce market volatility and strengthen the confidence of European governments in their energy security, the TASS interlocutor added.
