Trump: Putin couldn’t believe US settled Armenia–Azerbaijan dispute
US President Donald Trump stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin was surprised by his ability to bring the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan to an end.
Speaking during a broadcast on the White House’s YouTube channel from the US–Saudi Arabia Investment Forum, Trump noted that Putin had personally called him, Caliber.Az reports.
“Actually, Putin called me. He said, ‘I can't believe you got that one [conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan] settled. We've been trying to settle that one for a long time’,” adding that he was astonished Washington had managed to secure such a settlement.
The American leader went on to address broader geopolitical issues during the same forum, reiterating his disappointment with the Russian leader over the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Trump said he had expected the conflict to be easier to resolve due to his previously “good relationship” with Putin, but acknowledged that his expectations had not been met. “I’m a little disappointed in President Putin right now,” he said, adding that the Russian leader was aware of this sentiment.
In a separate remark at the joint summit with representatives of Saudi Arabia, Trump sharply criticised the previous US administration, saying the country had become “an embarrassment all over the world” under its leadership.
He argued that Washington had since restored its international stature, emphasising that the country had re-established its credibility on the global stage after a period when, in his view, US leaders were unable to carry out their responsibilities effectively.
