Tunnel collapse in Los Angeles: Dozens of workers rescued VIDEO
After a tunnel collapse at a construction site in Wilmington, 31 workers were safely extricated without injuries, the Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed.
No workers remain missing following the collapse of the 18-foot-diameter tunnel, officials said, Caliber,Az reports, citing American media.
“Preliminary reports indicate that the trapped workers managed to climb over a 12-15 foot pile of loose soil to reach coworkers on the other side of the collapse, who then transported them in groups via tunnel vehicles over five miles to the access point,” the LAFD said in a statement.

The workers were evacuated using a specialised elevator system called a “bird cage,” which can carry up to eight people at a time and serves as the sole entry and exit point of the tunnel, Michael Chee, spokesperson for the L.A. County Sanitation District, told The Times.
The accident occurred during the Clearwater Project, a new tunnel construction designed to transport treated wastewater from the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant to the ocean.
