Turkish former defence minister urges Turkic unity amid South Caucasus peace efforts

15 April 2025 14:26

In a resolute appeal for cohesion among Turkic nations, Hulusi Akar—former Minister of Defence and current Chair of the Turkish Parliament’s Committee on National Defence—emphasised the critical importance of regional solidarity and the pursuit of enduring peace in the South Caucasus.

Addressing the second session of the TURKPA Defence Committees convened at Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis, Akar declared that the long-anticipated peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia is not only essential for the two nations but is in the broader interest of all regional stakeholders, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

“The peace agreement will be beneficial for all South Caucasus countries. Türkiye supports the steps taken in this direction,” he said, reaffirming Ankara’s commitment to stability and reconciliation efforts.

Reflecting on historical grievances, Akar recalled the nearly three-decade occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia, which resulted in the displacement of approximately one million Azerbaijanis. He specifically cited the atrocities committed during this period, referencing the Khojaly massacre as a stark example of the suffering endured by the Azerbaijani people.

“The whole world was silent in the face of these crimes. This once again proves that Turkic states have no friends but themselves. We must strengthen our unity,” Akar stated, highlighting what he views as international indifference during critical periods in Turkic history.

His remarks come at a pivotal time, as diplomatic negotiations between Baku and Yerevan are reportedly nearing a peace accord that could formally end decades of hostility.

The second meeting of the Heads of Committees on Defence and Security of the TURKPA Member Parliaments features discussions under the theme “Strengthening Security and Defence Cooperation among the Turkic States: Role of Parliaments.”

The session brought together defence committee leaders from various Turkic states, signaling a coordinated effort to deepen security and political ties within the Turkic world amid shifting geopolitical dynamics.
