Turkish media focuses on President Aliyev’s key points at climate summit

13 November 2024 10:02

Turkish television channel Haber Global has produced a report on Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's speech during the opening ceremony of the World Leaders' Summit at the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

The broadcast highlighted the significance of Azerbaijan hosting such a major international event under the auspices of the UN for the first time in the country's history, Caliber.Az reports citing local media.

The coverage presented key points from President Ilham Aliyev’s address, emphasizing his responses to accusations directed at Azerbaijan.

"If, then, some Western politicians and media called us a petrostate, that would probably have been acceptable. But when they call us a petrostate now, today, this is not fair, and it only demonstrates a lack of political culture and knowledge. Today, Azerbaijan's share of global oil production is 0.7%, and its share of global gas production is 0.9%. But the fake news media of the country, which is the number one oil and gas producer in the world and produces 30 times more oil than Azerbaijan, calls us a petrostate. They had better look at themselves, or at least at their neighbour, which produces 10 times more oil than Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan’s share in global gas emissions is only 0.1%," Ilham Aliyev said.

The report also highlighted Azerbaijan’s significant contributions to shaping the global climate agenda and the leadership role President Aliyev is playing in this effort.

COP29, held from November 11 to 22 at Baku Stadium, is the largest event Azerbaijan has hosted to date, marking the first instance of a COP summit in the region. The event has seen the signing of a Host Country Agreement and other critical documents between the Azerbaijani government and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat.

The summit features the high-level World Leaders' Summit on Climate Action, taking place on November 12-13.

A core objective of COP29 is to establish a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) for climate finance. The COP29 Presidency has launched 14 initiatives that integrate climate action with Sustainable Development Goals. These initiatives address areas such as green energy corridors, energy storage, climate resilience, clean hydrogen, methane reduction, and green digital technologies. One of the main proposals is the creation of a Climate Finance Action Fund.

Creating climate finance mechanisms is crucial for achieving the 1.5°C climate target.

Azerbaijan has demonstrated a strong commitment to environmental protection and climate change mitigation. The decision to select Azerbaijan as the host for COP29, made unanimously by the Conference of the Parties, reflects the international community's respect and confidence in the country. President Ilham Aliyev has expressed that this recognition underscores the trust the world places in Azerbaijan.
