Turkish MP: Life returns to normal in Azerbaijani quarter in quake-hit Kahramanmaras
Life has largely returned to normal in the "Azerbaijani Quarter," a new residential area built in the earthquake-devastated Turkish city of Kahramanmaras, according to Nevzat Pakdil, a member of parliament for the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Parti) in Kahramanmaras Province.
"The government of Azerbaijan provided material and moral support and made a significant contribution to the construction of this quarter. I express my gratitude to the Azerbaijani people, state, and government on behalf of Türkiye and Kahramanmaras," Pakdil said, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Kahramanmaras, the epicentreof the February 2023 earthquake, was the hardest-hit city among the eleven provinces affected. Much of the city centre, where the Azerbaijani Quarter now stands, was almost completely destroyed.
With Azerbaijan’s support, 1,213 apartments, 1,782 jobs, and 1 school are being inaugurated in Kahramanmaras. The project, named the “Azerbaijani Quarter,” is part of a broader reconstruction effort following the February 6, 2023 earthquakes that killed 53,537 people, injured 107,213, and destroyed nearly 39,000 buildings in southeastern Türkiye.
