Türkiye advances air defence capabilities with successful test of new SİPER missile
Türkiye has successfully test-fired its domestically developed SIPER-1D long-range air defence missile from the National Vertical Launch System (MIDLAS). This achievement positions Türkiye among a select group of nations capable of deploying indigenous long-range air defence systems from their own warships, a development aligned with the strategic vision of the “Blue Homeland” maritime doctrine.
The SIPER-1D missile, boasting a range exceeding 100 kilometers, was launched during tests that coincided with the anniversary of the Turkish Naval Forces’ establishment, underscoring its symbolic and operational importance, Caliber.Az reports, citing official X account of SavunmaSanayiST.com.

The MIDLAS vertical launch system, developed through a joint effort between Türkiye’s leading defense contractors Roketsan and Aselsan, provides comprehensive 360-degree firing coverage and supports multiple types of guided missiles from naval platforms. Following successful land-based tests—such as the December 2022 launch of a HISAR-RF missile—MIDLAS has been integrated into the TCG Istanbul (F-515), Türkiye’s first nationally built frigate and the lead ship of the ISTIF-class, delivered to the Turkish Naval Forces in 2024.
This integration represents a pivotal enhancement to Türkiye’s maritime defence architecture, enabling effective long-range interception capabilities aboard frontline warships.
Designed to address modern air defense requirements, the SIPER system supports a wide array of functions, including coordinated air defense planning and real-time unified air situational awareness. It features two variants with the following specifications:
SIPER 1:
Maximum interception range: 100+ km
Interception altitude: 20+ km
Full 360-degree coverage
Vertical and inclined launch capabilities
Battery-level guidance capacity for up to 20 missiles
SIPER 2:
Maximum interception range: 150+ km
Interception altitude: 30+ km
Full 360-degree coverage
Vertical and inclined launch capabilities
Battery-level guidance capacity for up to 20 missiles
In a statement celebrating the successful test, Roketsan reaffirmed its dedication to enhancing the Turkish Armed Forces’ operational capabilities: “We will continue to produce for our country and add strength to the power of our Armed Forces.”
