Türkiye to join genocide case against Israel
Türkiye is set to file a declaration of intervention in South Africa's genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague on August 7.
The declaration will be made at 13:30 GMT, following Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan's announcement earlier this week, Caliber.Az reports citing the foreign media.
The source indicated that Türkiye’s intervention aims to prompt the international community to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
In May, Türkiye decided to join the case against Israel, stepping up its measures over the Gaza assault, and indicated it would follow the necessary legal processes. Spain also requested to intervene in the case at the ICJ in June.
Israel has rejected the genocide allegations, asserting that its operations in Gaza are acts of self-defense targeting Hamas militants responsible for the October 7 attacks.
Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a deadly surprise attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, spreading terror throughout the country. The carnage triggered a fierce response from Israel, whose military launched massive retaliatory strikes on the Gaza Strip. Since then, the Palestinian enclave of 2.3 million inhabitants, under Israeli blockade since 2007, has been living under bombardment, forcing hundreds of thousands of people to flee their homes.
