US professor: Azerbaijan’s Shusha summit tackles misinformation epidemic
President of the US Global Policy Institute, professor Paolo von Schirach has likened the rampant spread of misinformation to a global epidemic akin to COVID-19, emphasising the critical role of forums like the Shusha Global Media Forum in combating this pressing issue.
Speaking to journalists, von Schirach underscored the urgent need to address the proliferation of disinformation through enhanced legislative measures and technological advancements, Caliber.Az reports citing the local media.
"Disinformation is an epidemic. Through forums like these, we exchange ideas on combating this enemy called disinformation. Unfortunately, fake photos and videos are increasingly weaponized to spread misinformation," von Schirach stated.
Highlighting the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in exacerbating this challenge, von Schirach noted the dual nature of technological advancement. While AI development promises efficiency gains across various sectors, it also amplifies the dissemination of false information.
"Artificial intelligence has contributed to the rise in misinformation cases. It has become a tool not only for progress but also for spreading fake news, which I compare to the cancer of the media," von Schirach remarked.
Acknowledging the organizational efforts of the Azerbaijani government in hosting the forum, von Schirach commended such platforms for their pivotal role in fostering innovative solutions to combat disinformation.
"I believe that tightening laws is crucial to defeating disinformation. Events like the Shusha Global Media Forum are instrumental in identifying new tools and strategies," von Schirach concluded.
