Uzbekistan holding parliamentary election with mixed electoral system
The voting process for the election of MPs to the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan (parliament) and local councils has begun.
The voting will be held from 8:00 to 20:00 (GMT+5), Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
For the first time in Uzbekistan, parliamentary election is being held by using a mixed majoritarian-proportional system.
A total of 10,717 polling stations have been established for the election. More than 60 observers from the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly are monitoring the parliamentary election in Uzbekistan.
A total of 19,944,859 voters have been included in a unified e-voter list across the country. For the first time, 506,800 young people are participating in the election.
This year, political parties have nominated a total of 875 candidates for the Legislative Chamber, 3,625 candidates for regional and Tashkent city councils, and 24,850 candidates for district and city councils.
According to the Uzbek Central Election Commission (CEC), a total of 1,015,948 voters in Uzbekistan and 132,667 voters abroad participated in early voting. Voting will conclude at 20:00 at the polling stations, followed by the counting of votes.
