Vučić: Serbia nears gas plant deal with Azerbaijan
President of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić has said Belgrade is close to signing an agreement with Azerbaijan on the construction of a gas-fired power plant, a project he described as strategically important for both Serbia and Europe’s energy security.
Speaking after a session of Serbia’s National Security Council focused on the energy situation, Vučić said the deal could be finalised within a month. He made the remarks in response to a question from the Balkan bureau of Report News Agency.
“Of course, Serbia and Azerbaijan maintain high-level friendly relations, and we are on the verge of signing a major agreement on a gas power plant that is of great importance to our country. We hope this will happen very soon — within a month,” he stated.
Vučić stressed that the project would further enhance Azerbaijan’s role in ensuring Europe’s energy security, highlighting the growing importance of cooperation with Baku.
He also praised Ilham Aliyev, saying his role in the energy sector is viewed in Serbia as “stabilising and extremely important.”
According to the Serbian president, the planned project is expected to mark a new stage in bilateral relations between the two countries.
