Iran ready to resume diplomatic ties with Egypt - spokesman
Iranian Government Spokesman Ali Bahadori Jahromi has said that Tehran is ready to resume ties with Egypt.
Addressing a weekly press briefing on May 30, Jahromi said that President Ebrahim Raisi had ordered the country's foreign minister to pursue the case in a serious manner, according to IRNA.
Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said in a meeting with Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said on May 29 that Iran welcomes the resumption of relations with Egypt.“We welcome the Omani Sultan’s statement regarding Egypt’s willingness to restore relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, and we have no objection to this,” Khamenei’s official website quoted him as saying.
The Omani Sultan was hosted by President of Egypt Abdel Fattah al-Sisi a few days before his visit to Tehran. That led to speculations that Muscat is planning to open a new round of mediation between Cairo and Tehran.
Experts believe that Egypt and maybe Bahrain will be the two countries that could soon resolve their disputes with Iran.
This comes as countries in the region are working to reduce tensions. In March, Saudi Arabia and Iran announced that they had reached an agreement, brokered by China, to reestablish diplomatic relations after seven years of no formal ties.
Relations between Cairo and Tehran deteriorated after the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran and witnessed a remarkable improvement during the era of the late Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi.
However, the development of relations did not last long after toppling Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood from power.
