Political analyst: Azerbaijan dictates agenda, sticking to its line

02 March 2024 16:10

Political analyst Hakob Badalyan commented on the meeting between Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan in Munich.

"Today, Germany cannot fulfil its peace treaty obligations and German mediation is unreliable, especially for the Armenian side. The German government is under strong domestic pressure and its rating is very low," he said, per Caliber.Az.

"Ilham Aliyev is playing his game. When Azerbaijan went to Munich and agreed to Scholz's offer and so on, he was probably well aware of the situation in Germany. And since Germany has to solve complex problems in a difficult situation, Aliyev sees an opportunity to help Scholz, at least at this stage. He can act as a mediator who can organise a meeting, but no more than that," the expert said.

"So Azerbaijan's statements after Munich have not changed. Yesterday I heard Hikmet Hajiyev's statements on the Armenian constitution in this forum, and it is obvious that Azerbaijan is not giving up any of its conditions. In other words, Azerbaijan is sticking to its line and I don't see any change in this line. Azerbaijan is evaluating the environment and using that evaluation to set its agenda.

Besides, I do not share the opinion that Azerbaijan is not alone in these meetings and that Russia is also represented there. I think this is a bit exaggerated. On the contrary, if we talk about whether Azerbaijan represents only itself or not, it should be noted that Azerbaijan has been cooperating with Türkiye for many years. Another question is whether they have any agreements with Russia or Türkiye," the political analyst summed up.
