After Alaska talks, Moscow says Trump rethinking Ukraine strategy
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that following the Russian-American summit in Alaska, US President Donald Trump and his team have begun approaching the Ukrainian settlement in a much deeper and more comprehensive way.
He made this statement in an interview with the Russia-24 television channel, as per TASS.
“President Trump and his team, particularly after the meeting in Alaska, have started to take a much more thorough approach to resolving this crisis, recognising that it is essential to address the root causes. This is something President [Vladimir] Putin has consistently emphasised,” Lavrov explained.
He stressed that one of the fundamental causes of the crisis lies in the issue of Russia’s security, tied to the repeated violation of assurances given decades ago that NATO would not expand eastward. “The president has pointed out on several occasions that despite these promises, NATO carried out five waves of expansion,” Lavrov said.
The summit between Putin and Trump took place on August 15 at a military base in Alaska. The discussions lasted about three hours and included several formats: first, a one-on-one conversation in the American president’s limousine while en route to the main venue, followed by a restricted meeting in a “three-on-three” format.
On the Russian side, Putin was joined by Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov and Foreign Minister Lavrov, while the US delegation included Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump’s special envoy Stephen Witkoff.
In a statement after the talks, Putin said the Ukrainian conflict had been the central topic of the summit. He also called for a reset in Russian-American relations, urging both countries to “turn a new page” and resume cooperation. The Russian leader additionally invited Trump to visit Moscow.
Trump, for his part, acknowledged progress in the discussions, while noting that the two sides had not been able to resolve all outstanding issues.
