Armenian diplomat accused of treason denies guilt
Ashkhen Aleksanyan, an employee of the Armenian Foreign Ministry’s diplomatic corps, has denied any wrongdoing in a case where she faces charges of treason.
According to Caliber.Az, citing Armenian newspaper Hraparak, Aleksanyan’s lawyers, Abgar Poghosyan and Tavros Gevorgyan, declined to comment on the specific allegations but confirmed that they had appealed her arrest to a higher court. The outcome of the appeal is not yet known.
The Armenian Investigative Committee (IC) told journalists that Aleksanyan is the sole individual implicated in the case and remained in custody after the preliminary investigation concluded. The IC has not released further details regarding the nature of the case.
Aleksanyan’s detention was first reported on August 29. She is accused of allegedly spying for Azerbaijan. On the same day, the Investigative Committee confirmed that a criminal case for high treason had been initiated against her in June.
